Feature: Indian women empower through blogging, thanks to Alibaba

      NEW DELHI, Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- Women empowerment is being witnessed in India through a blogging platform "wemedia," thanks to Chinese e-commerce giant "Alibaba."

      Former journalists, content writers and those having a natural flair for creative writing are earning quite a buck, through their blogs posted on the "wemedia" which has come up as a popular writing platform over the past two years.

      Content generated and posted on it range on subjects like fashion, entertainment industry particularly Bollywood, lifestyle and cricket which is followed and loved like a religion in India.

      Pratibha Saraswat, 28, a former media journalist, didn't know an idea about cricket till two years ago, and today she is an accomplished and most sought after female blogger on "wemedia" platform.

      She said "earlier I used to spend around 12 hours a day while working for a TV news channel. It was too time consuming. Today I earn almost the same amount in a month by writing for wemedia, and it takes just a couple of hours! Rest of the time I spend in upbringing my kids and looking after my family at home. I find this as a perfect example of women empowerment."

      "I have nearly 350,000 followers on wemedia and I am perhaps the only female doing audio-commentary on cricket, besides the regular blogging on the platform. I have had a wonderful experience so far with wemedia. The best thing is that I am the master of my own work, and I set my own agenda and deadlines. I feel as a free woman working from home, and earning a decent amount every month."

      Similarly, Ina is a prolific writer on subjects like fashion, lifestyle and women issues. "I began writing blogs for wemedia one year ago and today I have thousands of followers. I spend nearly three-four hours every day in doing research and writing blogs. Wemedia is a lively example of women empowerment I feel," Ina told Xinhua.

      Vibha Sachdeva, another journalist-turned-entrepreneur, said "earlier I was into active TV journalism. Then I quit and set up my own media firm for making documentaries and content writing. One day I came across wemedia and soon began blogging. It's an easy way for me to keep up my flair for writing and have my own set of audience, and with an handsome earning too."

      On Wednesday the women bloggers participated in a daylong philanthropy conference held in Delhi on women empowerment organised by Chinese e-commerce giant Alibaba. The event was attended by women-activists, female Bollywood stars and philanthropists.

      Damon Xi, the General Manager of Alibaba group's "UCWeb India" said there are around 65,000 Indian bloggers on wemedia platform.

      "This figure we have achieved in past two years. We encourage bloggers to write on subjects of their interests and their passion. On our platform a blogger is rated according to the content he or she generates and also depends on the number of followers."

      With its user influence and brand reputation in the Indian market, UC launched a series of philanthropic projects on three main perspectives: Children Protection, Education, and Women Empowerment.
