BUENOS AIRES, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Uruguayan forwards Miguel Merentiel and Edinson Cavani netted second-half goals as Boca Juniors clinched a 2-0 home win over Banfield in Argentina's Primera Division on Sunday.
The hosts broke the deadlock in the 55th minute when Merentiel combined with Brian Aguirre and wrong-footed goalkeeper Facundo Sanguinetti before tapping the ball into an unguarded net.
Cavani doubled the advantage by heading home from point-blank range after Rodrigo Battaglia's header from a corner rebounded off the crossbar.
Banfield had only two shots on target as Boca eased to its second consecutive win following a run of 12 matches without victory.
"Today we did as we always do, which is give our all," Cavani told reporters after the match at La Bombonera. "What matters most is that the team wins and that we continue on the path to achieving our objectives."
Cavani, who has scored only four times in 19 games across all competitions this year, said Boca's mentality had changed since a 3-0 away win over Independiente Rivadavia on August 17.
"Winning makes you happier," the 38-year-old former Napoli, Paris Saint-Germain and Manchester United star said. "We were needing that, and now our focus has to be on continuity and consistency."
In other Argentine top flight matches on Sunday, Argentinos Juniors won 4-1 at home to Racing Club and Union Santa Fe was held to a 1-1 home draw by Huracan. ■
