LONDON, Aug. 24 (Xinhua) -- Manchester United's difficult start to the season continued Sunday as Ruben Amorim's side was held to a 1-1 draw away at Fulham, following its opening-day defeat to Arsenal.
Bruno Fernandes missed a penalty for United with the score at 0-0, but his side went ahead in the 58th minute when Leny Yoro's header deflected into the Fulham net.
The home team responded well, with Emile Smith-Rowe volleying in the equalizer in the 73rd minute, shortly after coming on as a substitute. Fulham looked the more likely to win in the closing minutes, but both sides had to settle for a point.
Everton opened its new Hill-Dickinson Stadium in style with a 2-0 win over Brighton. Jack Grealish delivered a standout performance, setting up Iliman Ndiaye for the first-half opener and playing a key role as James Garner doubled the lead in the 52nd minute. Jordan Pickford then saved Danny Welbeck's 73rd-minute penalty to secure the victory.
Crystal Palace was also held to a 1-1 draw at home by Nottingham Forest. Ismaila Sarr put Palace ahead after 37 minutes, before Callum Hudson-Odoi equalized for Forest. Reports in England suggest Forest coach Nuno Espirito Santo could lose his job next week following a disagreement with club owner Evangelos Marinakis.
On Saturday, Arsenal cruised to a 5-0 win at home to Leeds United on the same day the club confirmed the signing of Eberechi Eze from Crystal Palace. Jurrien Timber and Viktor Gyokeres both scored twice, while 15-year-old Max Dowman made his debut. The win was marred by injuries to Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard, with Saka's hamstring issue a particular concern.
First-half goals from Brennan Johnson and Joao Palhinha gave Tottenham a 2-0 win away to Manchester City, who repeated the defensive lapses that proved costly last season.
Elsewhere, Bournemouth beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 1-0 at home, while Burnley recorded its first win of the season with a 2-0 victory over Sunderland in a clash of newly promoted sides.
On Friday, Chelsea thrashed West Ham 5-1 at the London Stadium to increase early-season pressure on West Ham manager Graham Potter.
Newcastle United hosts Liverpool on Monday, with Liverpool's pursuit of Newcastle striker Alexander Isak adding extra intrigue to the fixture. ■
