RIO DE JANEIRO, Aug. 23 (Xinhua) -- Kaio Jorge continued his prolific scoring form as Cruzeiro edged to a 2-1 home win over Internacional in Brazil's Serie A on Saturday.
Matheus Pereira opened the scoring for the host by curling a first-time effort from distance into the far corner, but Bruno Tabata equalized with a low finish that beat goalkeeper Cassio at his near post.
Former Juventus striker Kaio then ran onto William Furtado's pass and took a touch before lifting a shot over onrushing goalkeeper Sergio Rochet.
Kaio has now scored 15 times in 20 Brazilian Serie A appearances this season. The 23-year-old was rewarded for his consistency earlier in the week by being included in Brazil's preliminary squad for World Cup qualifiers against Chile and Bolivia next month.
"It's very gratifying for me to be able to contribute to this great club," Kaio told reporters after the match. "I'm going to continue working hard, and hopefully it will be enough to be given a chance with the national team."
The result leaves Cruzeiro second in Brazil's 20-team Serie A standings with 41 points, two behind Flamengo, which has two games in hand. Internacional is 12th, 17 points further back. ■
